Christmas in Andorra

Andorra La Vella at Christmas

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to experience Christmas surrounded by the snow-capped mountains of Andorra?  This time of year is often governed by traditions but what would happen if you broke the mould and decided to experience the festive season from a different perspective.  Here we look at the differences and similarities of how we celebrate this special time.

Christmas Markets

Christmas MarketLa Massana

Since the early 2000’s, the German tradition of Christmas street markets has spread rapidly and Andorra is no exception. With different markets in various towns and villages across the country during December (featured above, La Massana) they offer the traditional assortments of Christmas articles, varied craftwork and food.

Christmas Dinner

Here instead of having their slap-up meal on Christmas day, it’s tradition to have your Christmas meal on the 24th December, Christmas Eve.  This works out well for anyone enjoying the mountain during the festive period as this means you can spend all day on the 25th up on the snow without missing out.  Many of the hotels will offer Gala dinners for you to celebrate and enjoy.

Arrival of Father Christmas

SantaPrincesa Parc, Arinsal

Christmas wouldn’t be complete without a visit from Saint Nicholas and he makes time during his busy schedule for a stop here.  This Christmas Eve (December 24th) from 4.30 p.m, he will be taking his sleigh and parade its way through La Margineda, Sta. Coloma and Andorra la Vella. At 7 p.m. he is expected to reach the La Llacuna Cultural Centre to greet the children and hear their requests.

Christmas Shopping

There can’t be many places better to shop for Christmas than Andorra la Vella, Andorra’s capital.  With a vast range of perfume, clothing and electrical stores you will find everything you could need and all with the bonus of there just being a 4.5% tax.  Andorra la Vella is easy to navigate with a pedestrianised main shopping street and there are plenty of nice bars and restaurants for when you get tired.  Parking can be found from as little as 20 cents for 1hr 15mins so even if you are just browsing it won’t cost the world!

Don’t be disappointed if you don’t get a present

For Andorra, as it is in Spain, gift-giving is actually done on the 6th of January for the festival of the Three Kings.  In modern days though, most families will exchange a few gifts on the 25th December, saving the rest for the 6th January.  In my eyes, anywhere you get double presents can’t be bad!
