Andorra Summer Holidays 2017

Families on lake, Grandvalira

Are you looking for somewhere new and exciting for your summer holidays?

You might naturally associate Andorra with skiing, but in recent years more and more people are finding out the fantastic range of activities on offer for the whole family – adrenaline fuelled challenges through to relaxing spas, or energetic fun for younger children – this summer you should definitely consider Andorra!

Cycling

Fast becoming a mecca for mountain biking, Vallnord will again host the Mountain Bike World Cup from 26th June to 2nd July 2017.  Throughout the summer you can test yourself on the slopes of both Vallnord Bike Park and Soldeu Bike Park.

If road bikes are more your thing, then fear not!  The mountainous terrain of Andorra certainly provides a challenge and regularly features in the Tour de France and La Vuelta a España, and will again feature in two stages of La Vuelta on 21st & 22nd August.

Hiking

Andorra offers a great choice of walking routes around the country, with routes ranging in difficulty for both amateur and professional hikers.  Hidden high up in the mountains there are some stunning lakes, peaks and valleys, so don’t forget your camera.

Whether you decide to follow one of the pre-set routes that take you from border to border, or a more circular route to find one of the refuges we recommend finding a local guide that can assist you planning or even accompany you on your journey.

If you take climbing seriously then why not explore the Via Ferrata.  Via Ferrata are metal loops that have been placed into rock faces to aid climbing.  You’ll need to be comfortable with heights as you ascend in stunning surroundings, as once you have started there is no going back.  Not all of the climbs are equipped with just the metal rungs, some have Tibetan bridges, monkey bridges or gangplanks for you to navigate as well.  To get down is normally via footpath although occasionally there is the option to abseil.

Families

If you’re coming for a family holiday then you have some excellent options in Grandvalira and Vallnord, as well as Naturlandia in Sant Julia de Loria (close to the Spanish border).

Naturlandia is an nature based adventure centre hosting a range of fun, family activities.  The highlight is definitely the Tobotronc, which they refer to as “The longest nature slide in the world”.  It’s a 5.3km alpine roller-coaster that winds through the trees and natural surroundings, are you brave enough to make it to the bottom without applying the brakes?

If you are missing the chill of winter, you could always head to the Palau de Gel (Ice Palace) in Canillo to go on the Olympic sized ice rink, there are even night-time sessions along with a heated swimming pool.

Adrenaline

Head over to El Tarter after the 1st of July to try your hand (and feet) at go-karting.  New for Summer 2017, Karting Marc Gene, offer two-seater go-karts which means all the family can get involved.  The 500-meter long track will be specially designed by racing drivers to ensure maximum enjoyment

If you have ever watched Superman and thought you’d like to give that a go, then now is your chance!  The zip line, situated at Mon(t) Magic in Canillo allows to you whiz at speeds of up to 50 mph all at 40 meters above the ground!  Not for the faint-hearted.

Golf

If golf is how you like to relax then you should definitely add the course in Soldeu as one to try.  Situated 2,250 meters above sea-level it’s the highest golf course in Europe so offers some unrivalled views.  Designed by the British architect Jeremy Pern this 9-hole, 33-par course is certainly one of the highlight’s of Andorra’s summer season.

If you prefer something a bit more grounded then you could always try the Vall d’Ordino Golf Club and Pitch&Putt.  Suitable for all abilities, this facility has the only illuminated driving range in the country (covered and open) along with a swimming pool, putting green and much more!
