Preparing for your family ski trip to Andorra is exciting, but it can feel a bit overwhelming, especially for first-timers. Don’t worry! With some guidance and preparation, your ski vacation can be as smooth as fresh pistes. Here’s everything we think you need to know, to make your families ski trip stress-free and full of fun!

1. Packing for the Slopes: Essentials for the Whole Family
Packing the right gear can sometimes feel like a real puzzle. Here’s my checklist to make sure you have everything you need:
Clothing:
- Base Layers: Thermal tops and bottoms to keep warm.
- Ski Jackets and Ski Pants: Waterproof and insulated to protect against cold and snow.
- Ski Suit (Onesie): Incredibly cute for little ones, but consider how tricky it can be when going to the toilet and keeping the sleeves off the floor!
- Ski Socks: To keep feet warm and dry.
- Gloves or Mittens: Water-resistant and insulated, great for skiing and snowball fights!
- Neck Warmers/Face Masks: Protect against wind and cold.
- Hats: Perfect for off-slope activities.
- Goggles & Sunglasses: Goggles for skiing, and sunglasses for sunny breaks to protect against snow glare.
- Tip: There’s limited availability for renting clothes at the resort, and buying new gear can be expensive. Try borrowing from family and friends, buying secondhand from marketplaces, or checking out affordable options at Aldi or Lidl for children’s gear.
Other Essentials:
- Sunscreen & Lip Balm: Yes, even in winter! The sun reflects off the snow, increasing UV exposure. Think about those google tans you see- be safe and make sure to apply suncream even on a cloudy day.
- Snacks & Water: Skiing is demanding, so prepare with small snacks and a small soft water pouch. Make sure it’s compact, I find a Cereal bar is perfect!

Preparing the Kids: Getting Them Ready for the Slopes:
Introducing kids to skiing can be a wonderful experience for them and for you. I find it helpful to prepare them in advance, leading to a smooth first day and holiday. Even if they have been before, these tricks can help jog their memories.
- Practice Balance: Balance is key to skiing. Try practicing balances at home – I find a good tree pose is fun for all the family: Checkout this blog, it offers lots of helpful information.
- Book Ski School: Ski lessons from qualified instructors will give your kids a solid start while making it fun and engaging. Many resorts offer family-friendly ski schools and we are particularly fond of the Ski School in Arinsal, with English speaking instructors.
- Prepare Them: Talk about what to expect—cold weather, falling down, and getting back up. This can easily be introduced during story time. If you have them, they will love to hear your ski stories.
- Ski school: This can be a worry for little ones, its new, its an unknown. Maybe they already know they wont be with siblings. I remind my little ones its like school/nursery at home – and, at the end of the day they always get picked up with a warm hug!

Family-Friendly Resorts
Not all resorts are equal when it comes to your family ski trip to Andorra. Here are my favourites for families in Andorra:
- El Tarter: A quieter neighbour to Soldeu, perfect for families looking for a peaceful holiday, low key holiday. An excellent location to the mountain and enjoying the GrandValira ski area.
- Arinsal: Known for its excellent ski school, English speaking instructors and welcoming atmosphere. The kids will love the small bowling alley! A personal favourite for me!
- Soldeu: Wonderful beginner-friendly slopes, a modern resort and a great choice for families. Soldeu ticks all the boxes.

Insider Tips from Instructors
- Ski Sock Etiquette: Don’t double up on socks! It can actually make the feet sweat, which leads to colder toes. Invest in quality ski socks for comfort and warmth.
- Layer Up: Mountain weather can change rapidly, so dress in layers that can be easily added or removed to keep everyone comfortable throughout the day. Don’t be fooled by the village temperature- up on the mountain can be very different.
Our top tips
Ski trips can sometimes feel like a work! Work we think the ‘work’ is always worth it! But, these tips will keep things running smoothly:
- Book Ahead: Reserve lift passes, ski lessons, and rentals in advance to avoid stress on your first day.
- Plan Ski School: Popular times fill up fast, so book lessons early, especially during peak periods.
- Prepare for Travel: Keep the kids entertained on travel days with charged devices, favourite toys, or a travel bag filled with small distractions like snacks or a teddy. I let mine choose an activity magazine in the airport which keeps them entertained on the plane.
- Balance Activity and Rest: After a day on the slopes, enjoy some downtime. Put sometime aside to relax, a good balance will keep everyone happy! One of the best remedies I know is always a early night- for me and the kids!
Conclusion
Preparing for your family ski trip to Andorra doesn’t have to be a stress. From packing the right gear and choosing family-friendly resorts to ensuring the kids are ready for the snow, hopefully this little guide will make your trip stress-free. So, get ready, hit the slopes, and enjoy the magic of skiing with your loved ones!
