Skiing with a Conscience: How Andorra Is Embracing a More Sustainable Future. Sustainability has become one of the most important topics in winter tourism. Travellers are increasingly environmentally conscious and want to choose destinations that not only offer great skiing but also care for the mountains we all love.

In Andorra, this awareness is growing stronger each year. While we at Andorra Resorts aren’t directly involved in managing the ski areas, we work closely with resort partners and local providers to support initiatives that help make skiing here more sustainable — and enjoyable for generations to come.

Protecting a Unique Mountain Environment

Andorra’s landscapes are part of what makes skiing here so special — and the country has taken significant steps to preserve them. One shining example is the Ordino Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO for its environmental and cultural importance. This designation encourages balance between tourism, local life, and nature conservation — a perfect reflection of the sustainable direction Andorra is taking.

In the ski areas themselves, both Grandvalira and Pal Arinsal are making strong environmental commitments:
• Using 100% renewable electricity through Andorra’s national hydropower grid.
• Expanding snowmaking efficiency using smart systems that reduce energy and water use.
• Managing waste and recycling, improving lift operations, and investing in reforestation and erosion control projects.
• Hosting community initiatives such as mountain clean-up days to help maintain the natural beauty of the Pyrenees.

Working Together for a Sustainable Experience

Even small changes can make a big difference. We’re proud to work alongside resorts, transfer companies, and local partners who share this vision — helping visitors enjoy Andorra responsibly while supporting the local economy.

Here’s how we can all contribute:

1. Choose shared transfers
Travelling by shared coach transfer is one of the simplest ways to reduce your environmental footprint. Fewer vehicles mean lower emissions — and it’s also a smooth, great-value way to reach resort.

2. Spread travel across the season
If you’re flexible, consider visiting outside peak weeks. Travelling off-season helps spread the environmental impact across the winter, gives snowmaking teams a chance to manage resources more efficiently, and rewards you with quieter slopes and better value.

3. Support local eco-minded businesses
Many of Andorra’s bars, restaurants, and mountain providers are embracing sustainable practices — from locally sourced food to reduced plastic use and community-led projects. Supporting these businesses keeps tourism income in the valley and encourages more to follow suit.

4. Respect the environment
The Pyrenees are a fragile mountain ecosystem — and small actions from visitors make a big difference:
Recycle and sort waste using the clearly marked bins around resort and at accommodation.
Avoid single-use plastics — bring a refillable water bottle and use public fountains, many of which are supplied with fresh mountain spring water.
Conserve energy and water in your accommodation by switching off lights and heating when not needed and taking shorter showers.
Stay on marked pistes and avoid cutting through forested areas or sensitive off-piste zones.
Respect wildlife by keeping noise down and avoiding litter — food waste can harm local animals.
Use public or shared transport within resort whenever possible, reducing traffic and emissions in the valleys. Check out or blog on transport in Andorra.

These simple steps, when taken by many, have a lasting positive impact — helping to preserve Andorra’s pristine mountain environment for years to come.

Looking Ahead

Sustainability is not just about preserving snow — it’s about protecting a way of life. Andorra’s mountain communities depend on these landscapes, and with collective effort between visitors, local businesses, and resort partners, we can help them thrive. We love skiing and the mountains, and it’s clearer than ever that we all need to take steps now to ensure we can enjoy them for many years to come.

Whether you’re booking lessons, passes, equipment, or transfers, every conscious choice contributes to a more sustainable ski holiday — and a stronger, greener future for Andorra’s mountains.
